Our story

The Journey of HSSMA

The Hawaii State Society of Medical Assistants was founded with the vision of creating a supportive and enriching environment for medical assistants across the state. Our organization has grown over the years, driven by a passionate team of professionals who are dedicated to advancing the field of medical assisting. Through various initiatives and events, we strive to enhance the skills and knowledge of our members, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the challenges of the healthcare industry.

Meet the Professionals Behind HSSMA

Meet the dedicated professionals behind the Hawaii State Society of Medical Assistants. Our team is composed of experienced medical assistants and healthcare leaders who are committed to supporting our members and advancing the profession. Their expertise and passion drive our mission to provide exceptional resources and opportunities for growth.
President

Mae Dorado

Mae has been a CMA (AAMA) for 29 years and a medical assistant educator for 23 years. She progressed to managing multiple pediatric specialties before moving on to the role of office manager for a private pediatric surgery practice at Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children.
Vice President

Jennifer Au Hoy

Jennifer has been a CMA since 2002 and a Certified Professional Coder since 2007. She has over two decades of experience in emergency room medicine and urgent care. She is currently the Program Director at Kapi’olani Community College, where she educates and empowers future health care professionals.
Secretary

Latanya Edwards

Latanya Edwards is a Certified Medical Assistant since 2015, a Certified Professional Coder since 2017, and she also has her bachelor’s in Health Care Administration. She is currently employed as a medical assistant educator for Hawai’i Pacific Health’s High School Medical Assistant Training Program. Her experience lies primarily in urgent care and administration.
Treasurer

Mary Piso

Mary Leivi Piso, graduated from the Medical Assistant Program at Kapi’olani Communicty College. After graduation, she started working with the Hawai’i HOSA State Coordinator. She has experience competing at the state and national level as a student. She also works at the John A. Burns School of Medicine with Hawai’i/Pacific Basin AHEC helping students gain more knowledge of working in the health field.
Education Chair

Lillie Jackson

Born and raised on the windward side of ‘O‘ahu, Lillie is currently a faculty instructor for the Medical Assistant Program at Kapi’olani Community College. She loves to travel and visit new places, learn about different cultures, the people and especially their food!
Job title

Lynn Hamada

Lynn Hamada, RN, CMA, MPH, former Professor and Program Director of the Medical Assisting Program at Kapi’olani Community College, is the past Vice President of the Hawaii State Society of Medical Assistants. She is currently enjoying retirement and maintaining involvement in the profession as a member of the Board of Directors.
